Many people are abandoning the notion that an engagement ring can only feature a diamond and are choosing a variety of different gemstones rings.
There are many different names given to gemstones- jewel, semi-precious stone, fine gem, etc, however, although many know their names, not many know their meanings.
As gemstones are growing in popularity as engagement rings so we thought we’d do a quick post about the most popular fine gems and what they signify.
- Diamonds
Diamonds are sparkly, colourless stones. Firstly, diamonds are the birthstones for the month of April. They symbolise love, purity and faithfulness which is why they are the most popular stone in engagement and wedding rings. Ancient Romans and Greeks considered diamonds to be the tears wept by the Gods and then later, diamonds were thought to be fragments of stars falling to Earth.

- Sapphire
A sapphire stone in its most common form is blue but it can also come in pink, yellow and many more unique shades. It is said to symbolise fidelity and integrity. It is also the birthstone of the month of September.
- Opal
The most common colours of opal stones are white and green while the rarest colours are red and black. An opal stone is the birthstone for the month of October. It is often said to represent hope, innocence and purity.
- Emerald
An emerald stone is green and the deeper the green, the more valuable the gemstone. An emerald is considered the gem of Venus and is therefore believed to aid fertility. It is also thought to preserve love and is a symbol of hope. It also the birthstone for the month of May.
- Aquamarine
Aquamarine is normally a light blue colour. It is the birthstone of March. As the name implies, the colour alludes to the bright blue colour of seawater. It is often seen to be a symbol of youth.
- Morganite
Morganite can be found as either a soft peach colour or a pink morganite. It is often considered the symbol of divine love. It is said to promote the prosperity of love.
