Lab Grown Diamonds
Lab grown diamonds are created in a lab and offer an environmentally friendly alternative to natural diamonds. They look and feel the same as natural diamonds, are available in a variety of carat weights and stone cuts, and come with a more affordable price tag.

Moissanite
Similar in appearance to diamonds, moissanite is quickly becoming a popular choice for engagement rings.
Naturally occurring moissanite is incredibly rare. Because of its rarity, all moissanite for jewellery is created in a lab, making it an eco-friendly option with little environmental impact.
Moissanite has a brilliance comparable to a diamond at a much more budget-friendly price. When looking for a bigger ‘carat’ size, moissanite can make your budget go a lot further.
Because moissanite is graded by color, it’s important to choose a moissanite stone that is graded Premium or Super for optimal sparkle (we don’t sell anything less).
Sapphire Engagement Rings
Sapphire engagement rings are another gemstone option that’s steadily growing in popularity and provide a unique take on a traditional ring.

Choosing your Gemstone/Diamond Cut
The cut of a gemstone plays an important role in determining the brilliance of the stone.
Different cuts of gemstones will produce different light intensities.
While some cuts of stones produce impressive sparkle, others may deliver only a dull shimmer.
When considering gemstone cuts, ask yourself:
- How much sparkle am I looking for?
- Does the cut align with my style?

If you’re looking for optimal sparkle and gorgeous fire, stick with round, cushion, and princess cut stones. These cuts have optimal lighter performance and will deliver a gorgeous sparkle.
For a beautiful but slightly subdued sparkle, an emerald cut gemstone will do the job.
While an emerald cut gemstone won’t deliver as much sparkle as a round or princess cut stone, its unique shape will provide dimension and make up for the lack of sparkle.
Asscher cut stones produce the least amount of sparkle but have other redeeming qualities.

What are the 4 C’s of Diamonds?
If you choose a diamond for your engagement ring, be sure to consider the 4 C’s of diamond grading before choosing a stone.
The 4 C’s of diamonds include:
Carat
A carat refers to the physical weight of a diamond and does not refer to the physical size of the stone.
A carat is equal to 0.2 grams. To determine the carat of a diamond, the stone is weighed and then divided by 0.2 to determine the carat weight.
The higher the carat weight, the greater the price.
Cut
The cut of a diamond refers to how well the facets (flat surface on gemstone face) refract light to produce sparkle.
Diamond cuts are graded by two primary agencies: GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and AGI (Association of Gemological Institutes).
Diamond cuts are graded on seven criteria:
- Brightness
- Fire
- Scintillation
- Weight ratio
- Durability
- Polish
- Symmetry
Diamond cuts are rated as:
- Poor
- Fair
- Good
- Very Good
- Excellent
- Ideal
The higher the grade, the higher quality of the diamond.
Clarity
Clarify refers to the number of natural blemishes or flaws within a gemstone.
Clarity is rated on a 6-point scale and ranges from the lowest score of “Included (I1, I2, I3)” to the highest score, “Flawless (FL)”.
When choosing a diamond, it’s important to choose a stone with an appropriate clarity rating to reduce the visibility of inclusions.
Be sure to select stones with a clarity rating of SI1 (Slightly Included) if under two carats and choose diamonds with a clarity rating of VS2 (Very, Very Slightly Included) if over two carats.
Color
Color grading refers to the absence of color in a diamond and is rated using the GIA D-to-Z scale.
Diamonds are rated for color and are categorized as:
- Colorless (D-F)
- Near Colorless (G-J)
- Faint Yellow (K-M)
- Very Light Yellow (N-R)
- Light yellow (S-Z)
Diamonds with higher letter grades will impact other aspects of stone performance and may enhance the appearance of inclusions and demonstrate reduced light performance.
How to keep to your Budget
Last but not least, budget plays a big role in choosing the right engagement ring.
The price of an engagement ring will vary depending on a variety of factors.
When designing your engagement ring, consider what aspects of the ring design are the most important to you:
- If a diamond is a top priority, focus on finding a diamond with a grading report that scores high on the 4 C’s.
- If ring design is a top priority, consider allocating more of your budget to ring shanks and gemstone cuts to achieve your desired look.

Before my first appointment I sent them a number of engagement rings I liked and they were all ready when I arrived, but also one I hadn't mentioned which they judged I would like based on my other selections. Highly recommend Commins & Co. My fiancee purchased my engagement ring here in August 2021 and the service we received from Tracie and Robbie was second to none. We had a one on one appointment and were shown as many rings as we wished and given all the details of each, we never felt put under pressure or that it was just another sale- which was important as buying an engagement ring is such a special day. Without a doubt, the best jewelers to deal with. After going through several Irish jewelers and online jeweler stores, comparing the prices and quality of the engagement rings, I decided to go with Commins & Co. Their online selection was second to none and the quality of diamonds they use in their rings far exceeds other Dublin-based stores.Throughout the whole process, there was never a feeling of pushing for a sale. Any of my queries were dealt with professionally and swiftly by Robbie which definitely reinforced my decision to buy from here and made me feel at ease throughout the whole process.As I wanted a specific center diamond, Robbie and the team were able to obtain it and send high quality videos of the diamond. I couldn't recommend Commins & Co highly enough. We bought my engagement ring there at the start of the year. I knew I wanted a round solitaire with a gold band and found a lot of jewellers had only a few rings to chose from. I couldn't believe the huge range in stock in Commins & Co. They had so many gorgeous rings to chose from in a wide price range. The guys were so helpful offering expert advice that helped us make our decision and I couldn't be happier with my ring!
